We are searching for an Okihi Caretaker

Okihi connects people from every corner of our valley and beyond; promoting inclusivity, celebrating diversity, and elevating lives with exciting outdoor-based educational experiences. Our mission is to inspire and enrich our community through biologically diverse green spaces and mindful outdoor recreation.

  • Desire and ability to work in a community (an absolute must!)

    Ability to work within a team as well as independently on projects after adequate orientation has been given

    Strong work ethic, an enjoyment of physical work, and strength & stamina

    Ability to lift up to 50 lbs

    An enjoyment of tending animals, bees and gardens

    No allergies to animals

    Mindfulness, cultural sensitivity, and an ability for self-care & self-managing independent time

    Willingness to listen actively and speak authentically & honestly

    Good interpersonal skills, a positive attitude, and a good sense of humor

    Willingness to engage in community chores and being part of community events

  • Okihi support work exchange offering is a residency on the riverside property, grounded in community living and working as a team. The experience provides people with the day to day tasks of hands on learning about land management, animal care, grant opportunities, community programs and fundraising. This is a space to deepen connection with yourself and others while acquiring practical skills. You get to live in one of the most magical places in town and be part of community enrichment opportunities.

    Daily chores that are divided between caretakers include: cleaning animal areas. taking the animals out to forage the landscape, watering and maintaining the landscape, composting, building soil, seeding and planting seedlings and propagations, building retainment walls, building fences, removing invasive plants, and being present for community events. Each area there will be trainings and you will have to prove you are capable of handling each chore before being allowed to do them on your own. There will be weekly meetings for check in.

  • We are searching for flexible, self-motivated individuals who embrace simple, remote, rural living. Successful applicants are self-starters, curious, inclusive, comfortable in groups, creative problem solvers, and are able to manage themselves through a wide range of challenges and growth-experiences. Ability to manage personal energy, a good sense of humor, strong communication skills, a positive attitude, and a strong curiosity are essential attributes.

  • 3.5 days of being 100% present on the property for security and within that time 2o hrs per week will be dedicated to a contribution to the projects, community events and programs mentioned above.

    In exchange, we offer a living space that is fenced in, and pay for all power and trash. Animals must be approved. Once living on the property no new animals are allowed without first obtaining approval. There is a porti-potty within 50 feet of living space and hand washing station. There is also a septic system you can pump into from trailer if you have the means.

    Water is currently not supplied but is in the works to be reestablished.

  • We ask all visitors and volunteers to adhere to our no drugs policy, and to smoke products only in the designated smoking areas as we are in a zone at high risk for wildfires.

  • Once you begin, there is an initial 3 month trial period. During the trial period, work trade volunteers and the Okihi community can terminate the agreement.
